There has been some speculation that global mobile giant China Mobile could buy into China’s cable TV industry, a move that could give the mobile carrier wireline broadband facilities that could help it realize network efficiencies. However, market research firm Ovum says this is unlikely to happen because of China’s current regulatory setup, in which mobile regulators and cable TV-broadband regulators are likely to closely guard their own regimes and make cross-investment difficult. What could change things is if China adopts a unified national network plan along the lines of Australia, or at least make significant changes to the current regimes. For now, China Mobile does not appear to be a likely owner of cable TV operations
